Understanding Birthdays: Toddler Talk

Yesterday while we were shopping for Gloria’s birthday Clarabelle had a bit of a melt down because she wanted it to be her birthday. We kept on and on explaining that hers was only in a couple of weeks and that we had to celebrate Gloria’s first. This kept on all day long and part of this morning. Gigi finally explained to her that birthdays were to celebrate someone coming into the world.

Now, this explanation was given hours ago. I only found out about it when I look over into the next room and see Clarabelle hugging Gloria. Telling her ” I’m just so happy you’re here, Gloria.”

They were in the room alone. There were no watchful eyes. No listening ears to impress. She considered what Gigi had said and showed an honest, sincere, gladness for her cousin being in her life.

It’s super adorable when toddlers say things and they know you’re listening. When they’re just looking for attention.

But the truly beautiful moments are the things they say when they don’t think anyone is listening. Those are the purest moments.

Sing like no one is listening. Dance like no one is watching. Live as if heaven is on earth.
