The Four E’s of Easy Mornings with Four Toddlers! And yes, it can be done!

Most days, there are four little monsters running through the house, driving their cars, throwing balls, throwing anything that they can get their hands on, and bouncing off of any surface that constitutes singing “4 little monkeys!” It is a beautiful life. But, for those who know me best, mornings are rarely my perkiest moments. I need coffee! Lots and Lots of coffee. But, once their feet hit the floor, there is no time to sip the beautiful morning juice that is coffee! So, here are my little tricks (the four E’s) to dealing with 4 toddlers in the morning!

  1. Empty: Everything is emptied at night. I mean, the dishwasher is emptied. The washer is emptied. The dryer is emptied. The trash can is emptied. Everything. That way, breakfast dishes can go straight into the dishwasher, pajamas can be thrown into the washer (along with other clothes throughout the day), diapers are not overflowing. If everything is empty when we begin, then Gigi does not have to go crazy looking at a mess. So, a few minutes at night time makes every morning better.
  2. Expect: There are always mishaps in the morning. Someone is wearing their applesauce or oatmeal (basically because someone was able to throw it) or someone had an accident overnight. These things can cause chaos in the morning if you do not expect them. So, I keep a stack of bedding nearby. I have their clothes ready for the morning (with backups), and I have paper towels and baby wipes near their table. If I expect it, I can prepare for it and avoid the moments of chaos.
  3. Early: I still need my coffee. I still need to take a deep breath on the front porch before it all begins. So, I try to beat the children’s clocks and have that one cup before the first pitter patter. Now, as I said in no. 2, I always expect that this moment may pass quicker than anticipated but, if the effort is there, I usually can get my five minutes of sunrise.
  4. Enjoy: It gets crazy whether there are one or four toddlers and that is ok. Sometimes, we do not expect the unexpected. Sometimes, it gets chaotic despite our best efforts. But, is there anything cuter in the world than a syrup induced mohawk? I mean, seriously! Don’t let the mornings rattle your whole day. Instead, enjoy every moment of every day!

Mornings are how we know that God blessed us with another day!
