Life: It’s Worth the Risk

I grew up in a small town where nearly everyone knew everyone else. On every corner, you could count on either a bank, a church, or a gas station. My father always stated that this meant that everything that you could ever need was only a street away, at most. I suppose in some ways that is true.

I spent my summers and every break from school that I could in the mountains of McDowell County, West Virginia at my grandmother’s house. We drank spring water and counted the stars at night from the front porch swing. They went to the store once a month and my aunt would make the walk to the post office once a week. Sometimes, I would tag along and we would get penny candy from the Pop Shop. It was a nice place to be.

As an adult, I have moved around a lot and I have traveled a great deal. I have met many different people, saw many different ways of life, and experienced many things that would not have been possible in a small town or hidden in the mountains. I have been in situations that were less than comforting and yet I have memories that would blow away the box office records of many action-adventure films.

However, I cannot say that any moment of my life was less risky nor that I would give up one set of memories for the other. In the small town, you place yourself at risk by opening up to others. One blogger talks about how difficult it is to be willing to be your true self no matter what others may think. In the mountains, there is a risk of danger and isolation from aid should that danger occur. When chasing the next great adventure, there are a number of risks depending on what that adventure involves. However, another blogger swears that adventure is what life is made of! I would have to agree with this!

Regardless, everything we do poses a risk. The risks can vary from missing out on something to the actual risk to our safety and security. Everything has its risks. But, do you know what? Everything is worth it. This is your life. It is no bigger or smaller than anyone else’s. What risks that you decide are worth it are yours to encounter and the same goes for everyone else.

Live your life! It is so worth it!
