I just love the daily prompts! I mean, it may seem a bit silly to many of you, but I love anything that makes me reconsider a topic or term and place it into the context of my life. I believe that analyzing life through different angles is the only way to truly understand life. Today’s prompt is express and, as usual, I have taken a few moments to read the interpretations from other bloggers prior to presenting my own.
This morning I found a connection between two that struck me as odd. The first speaks of the importance of expressing ourselves in order to avoid losing ourselves while the other speaks of being in a life of such a rapid pace that they cannot communicate their feelings. Isn’t this the epitome of our society? We know what we need to do but we are too busy doing other things that our needs, and the needs of others, seem to get shoved under the rug.
Isn’t this the epitome of our society? We know what we need to do but we are too busy doing other things that our needs, and the needs of others, seem to get shoved under the rug. So this led me to thinking why are we in such a hurry and what are we missing out on? What are we chasing in the express lane that is so important and what are the differences between our wants, needs, and social obligations?
Well, I cannot answer this for you. This is not a life tutorial. I cannot provide simple definitions that will encompass all of our life’s experiences. Instead, I can say this. My grandchildren have taught me to stop and literally smell the flowers and this is what I need in my life. They have taught me that walking slowly through the mall instead of pushing them quickly in a stroller provides us all with exercise and time to speak to other mall walkers. I have learned that the best part of an ice cream is not quickly licking around the sides to avoid it dripping but rather sitting and watching the drips. What I need in my life is to avoid the express lane. I must only take on obligations that allow me to do this. I must take a breath every day and be thankful for that breath.
Now, perhaps your needs are different. Perhaps your wants or obligations define your needs and if so, that is okay too. So long as you are not in the express lane because you feel that you must be. So long as your rapid pace is not only to meet your wants and obligations but cost you your needs. Because, if this is true, reevaluate! It is possible to change your focus and live at your own pace!
Get off the express lane and live life at your own pace!
